I have lost my driving theory test certificate – what should I do?
Losing your driving test theory certificate can be a stressful and unpleasant experience. If you are learning to drive, that piece of paper is vital to getting your full licence. So, what should you do if your pass certificate goes missing?

If you have passed and have unfortunately lost your theory test certificate then it's important that you don't panic. Retrace your steps and check that you haven't simply misplaced it.

However, if your driving test theory certificate really is lost, don't worry. We have put together a guide to help you source a replacement so you can continue with your journey to becoming a fully qualified driver.

What is a driving theory test certificate?

A driving theory test certificate is awarded to a learner driver after they have successfully passed the theory part of the driving licence test.

The document will usually contain your name, driving licence number and pass certificate number. This certificate will also have an expiry date.

The driving theory pass certificate is needed before you can take the practical driving test. If you do not take your practical driving test before the expiry date then you will need to pay for and sit another theory test.

It is a document that should be kept safe – and its details stored where all learner drivers can get them when needed.

Lost theory test certificate – what are my options?

If you lose your driving test certificate, the first step is to contact the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). If you live in Northern Ireland, you should contact the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA).

On the official website of the DVSA and DVA, any learner that has lost the certificate can request a replacement. The DVSA offers a digital version, sent to your email inbox, which you can apply for on the Gov.co.uk website.

You will need to provide your full name, date of birth, and your provisional driving licence number.

Learner drivers will also need this information – along with the certificate to book the practical part of the driving test.

If it is urgent, you can also contact the DVSA by phone, by calling 0300 200 1122 or the DVA by phoning 0345 600 6700.

Do I need my theory test certificate for my practical driving test?

Yes, you will first need to pass the theory test before you can take the practical driving test.

After passing the first test, you will need the information on the theory test certificate in order to book the next one.

The theory test assesses your knowledge of road rules, traffic signs, and the Highway Code. You’ll need all of this information as part of the practical test – and in your life as a full licence holder.

Are you ready for your practical driving test?

To prepare for the theory test, an app like Driving Theory Test UK is a great place to start, with all necessary learning materials, hazard perception clips and Highway Code info included. You can download it here:
