An MOT – the Ministry of Transport Test – is an annual requirement for most used cars to see if the vehicle is legal and roadworthy. But how do you check the MOT history of a vehicle?
Regular car maintenance can help drivers avoid any expensive repairs, but the MOT provides a crucial role for car owners across the country.
This guide explains everything you’ll need to know about your MOT history and where you can find the necessary details.
What is an MOT history?
An MOT history refers to the record of all the MOT tests (Ministry of Transport tests) that a vehicle has undergone in the UK.
These tests are mandatory annual checks for vehicles over three years old and under 40 years old to ensure they meet road safety, legal, and environmental standards.
The MOT history record includes dates of previous tests, the pass/fail status of each test, the recorded mileage at the time of each test, and any MOT advisories or warnings about potential issues that may need attention from the owner.
It will also track any reasons for failure, if applicable to the vehicle.
This is so owners can track recurring issues or keep tabs on mileage and advisories over time.
It can also be used by potential buyers of a vehicle, who can check the history before purchasing a used car to get an idea of how well it’s been maintained.
You can check a vehicle’s MOT history for free on the UK government’s website. All you will need is the vehicle's registration number.
This MOT checklist can help you prepare for your next test.
RAC MOT checker
The RAC make checking your MOT due date easy. Just type your registration into the free MOT Checker and click ‘Check MOT’.
Your details will appear instantly, including when your MOT is due, MOT history, and if there are any outstanding advisories.
The checker works by running your vehicle’s registration number through the DVSA database.

Can I check my MOT history?
Yes, you can easily check your MOT history online, and it’s completely free on the official DVLA website.
To do this, visit gov.uk/check-mot-history and simply enter your vehicle’s registration number, and you’ll be able to view a detailed record of all previous MOT tests.
This includes the dates of each test, whether the vehicle passed or failed, recorded mileage, and any advisory notes or reasons for failure.
It’s a useful tool for keeping track of your car’s condition, especially if you’re planning to sell it or just want to stay on top of car maintenance.
DVLA MOT history
By visiting the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) website, you can check if a vehicle is taxed or has an up-to-date MOT.
The Government agency can also help drivers who have bought or sold a vehicle, or if the owner has changed address.
Owners can also request a new vehicle logbook – also known as a V5C – and update them on any changes in health or medical conditions.
The DVLA website can also be used to register a vehicle as off the road – Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN).
In 2025, the DVLA announced changes to the MOT process. This was done to tackle MOT fraud across the UK.
